What is Backwashing and Why it is Important

What is backwashing?
Backwash or backwashing is the process of thoroughly cleaning a swimming pool’s filter. This is, by a method of reversing the flowing water to flush out contaminants.
Backwashing your swimming pool is a process that is very important for your pool’s filter. And for your pool’s overall health.
How to backwash a filter?
Directions vary according to your filter type; better check the manufacturer’s website.
This instruction is for a DE filter: (backwash at least six times per year)
- Turn off the pump and turn the backwash valve to the backwash setting.
- Turn on the pump again until the filter view glass clears. Try to alternate between backwash and rinse a few times to remove more DE. Don’t forget to turn off the pump when changing valve settings.
- Discard the DE in the trash.
- Turn off the pump to make sure that the timer doesn’t turn back on while the filter is being disassembled.
- Drain the filter by opening the release valve at the top of the filter to allow the water to drain.
For sand filters ( backwash once a month)
- Turn off the pump.
- Turn the control valve to the “backwash’ position.
- Turn the pump on and allow it to run until the effluent water is clear as seen in the sight glass.shut off the pump.
- Turn the control to the “rinse’ position.
- Turn the pump on for 20-30 seconds.
- Shut off the pump again and return the valve back to the “filter” position.
When to backwash?
It really depends on how often you use your pool. And how dirty it gets throughout the swimming season. Another crucial time to backwash is after killing an algae bloom or when treating cloudy water.
Backwashing your filter is a normal and easy method that is important to the functionality of your pool.
